If you have a Facebook page for your business, attracting likes is probably pretty high on your agenda. Some business owners believe that the more likes they have on their Facebook page, the higher volume of sales they will make. Which is often the thought process behind buying likes – well either that or vanity!
But are Facebook likes important?
If you’ve been focusing on getting tons of likes for your Facebook page, I’m afraid I have some bad news for you. Likes have a £0 value. That’s right, ZERO.
It’s more important to have lots of engagement, and build relationships than lots of page likes – even if focusing on engagement and relationship building results in fewer likes.
Let me explain…
It’s the relationships and connections you have with people in Facebook that convert into warm leads and sales, not the media itself.
Think of it this way… if you go to an offline networking event carrying a copy of your printed brochure, you wouldn’t separate yourself from the brochure, and expect you and the brochure to be able to operate separately from each other.
Leaving aside the fact that a printed brochure can’t speak, I’m sure you recognise that sat on a table somewhere, left to its own devices, the brochure won’t get you a return on your networking investment.
It’s only through you chatting with people and getting them excited enough about your business that will entice them to read your brochure.
Yes?
Well your Facebook page is an online version of that printed brochure. Relatively speaking, the updates you post from your Facebook page are the text and images from your printed brochure.
So if you’re chatting to people in Facebook, getting to know them, and building relationships – at some point they’ll be interested enough to visit your Facebook page.
When they arrive, they’ll see your previous posts; including your regular posts inviting your followers to opt in to your Lead Magnet, and having got to know you, and being a bit curious to discover more about your business, they’ll want to opt in… as well as like your page
Now you’ve converted them into a warm lead, and any Facebook posts they see in their newsfeed after that is a bonus rather than a necessity for you to get sales… because your nurture system will be doing the work for you;
- Your autoresponder and broadcast emails that you send regularly
- Your Linked in updates and tweets if they follow you there too (because there’s no Edgerank filtering on Twitter or Linked in!)
- And any future promoted posts that you target at fans of your page…
… will all take the onus away from Facebook’s Edgerank algorithm and it’s frustrating ability to hide your posts from most of your page fans.
So this week, commit to ramping up your Facebook networking efforts. Commit to having more conversations with more people, and take your foot off the “get more Facebook likes” pedal
