People have often questioned how I have been able to get the opportunities needed to achieve things I’d previously only dreamed of, like:
Work with leading names in the online expert industry that I follow.
Speak on stage at bigger events, filled with my ideal clients.
Written a column in a county-wide print newspaper for two years.
My secret sauce…?
I ASKED FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES!
… and they said, YES!
I’m not unusual in that sense.
Social media inboxes are filled with people asking for what they want.
The mistakes people often make is they:
- Don’t ask outright but dance around the topic, then wait and hope the other person will spot their subtle hints and invite them.
- Or they do ask, but in a ‘me-focused’ way – “Please can I speak on your stage. It is my dream!”
Adopting either of these approaches will likely only lead to you being ignored or disappointed.
I don’t want that for you, so I’m going to let you into my little ‘secret’ ways…
First off, before you approach the person, have an idea of what THEIR goals are.
Example: the leader you want to work with is promoting a webinar.
What does a webinar host want?
More sign ups, more show ups and more conversions.
The event organiser whose stage you want to be on?
They want more people to book tickets, more engaged attendees in the room, and more sales, from stage or on the back end.
A newspaper editor?
Increase their readership, attract new and repeat advertising revenue, and – let’s go out of the box a little – recognition from their management that they’re doing a great job.
How will giving you what what you want give THEM what they want?
How will you help the webinar host get more sign ups, show ups or conversions?
How will you help the Editor increase readership, advertising revenues, or be recognised for doing a great job?
SPELL IT OUT to them.
Back it up with credibility and/or evidence.
Then, SELL the BENEFIT to them in your message.
Start small
Don’t jump straight in and ask for the BIG hire out of the gate.
It’s unlikely the leader you want to work with will hire you to help with their big annual launch that is happening next week.
Gift them a golden nugget, a slight tweak that will help them during that launch and ask for nothing at that stage.
When you’ve given them a small win, are they more or less likely to listen to your pitch?
(On that note, if what you are pitching WILL bring them more sales before cart close, you might get a YES if you pitch near the end of that same, BIG launch).
How I got to speak on stage at a 750-people national event was to speak at their small local event first.
How I got to speak at another 500-person event was to fill 50 seats at their event, off my own back.
In summary, the way to win more DREAM opportunities is to KNOW…
Who you want to pitch to.
What you want from them.
What they want, in general?
How hiring you will get them what they want.
Where you will start – for example, how you’ll help them improve the results from one webinar.
Reach out and SELL your promise as an opportunity for them.
Deliver on that promise.
Then ask for the big one.
Because, by this point, hiring you again will be a certainty, not a gamble!
Good luck!
