You can always tell when it’s holiday season. Not just because suddenly the media start increasing the number of holiday related features, but because Facebook groups suddenly become awash with comments informing you that so and so is out of office until such and such date.
But why do your fellow Facebook group members care?
Do we care so much that we have to read the same message on every single post in the group… for the duration of the absence?
Well, the truth is… often the person who is sunning themselves around the pool doesn’t even realise that they have become a Facebook group pest… they had no intention of announcing their absence on Facebook at all.
It’s entirely the fault of their out of office auto responder that they’ve set up on their email account!
You see… the purpose of your out of office email message is to respond to any new emails, informing the sender that you are away from the office. The message is instantly and automatically sent as a reply to all incoming email.
But if the email address you have set up the out of office message on, is the same email address you use for Facebook, AND you receive email notifications of new posts and comments in Facebook groups you are a member of… the out of office system sees these notifications as new emails too.
Why your out of office message is soooooo annoying?!
You probably know that you can comment on posts in Facebook groups by replying to the email notification? Well, what you may not have realised is that it’s exactly what is happening with your out of office message.
So every time a new post is added to the Facebook group, you are unwittingly posting your out of office message as a comment.
And when it’s an active Facebook group with lots of new messages being posted each day, your out of office comments get really bl**dy annoying for the other members!!
Which is really NOT good when you’ve joined the group to build relationships in the hope of generating sales!
So… before your next jaunt away from the office, make time to do ONE of the following things;
1) Go into each Facebook group that you are a member of, click on the cog icon, and uncheck the email notifications option. You can always switch the email notifications back on when you return.
2) Change the email address associated with Facebook to a personal email that doesn’t have an out of office message set up on it.
3) Don’t bother setting up an out of office message!
