Read these 5 mistakes that put your account at risk of being hacked or permanently shut down
There has been a spate of hacks and Facebook account shut downs recently, and often, the root cause can be one of these mistakes unfortunately.
Mistake #1: Sharing your personal password
When you share your login and someone else is active in your account at the same time as you, yet they’re hundreds or thousands of miles away, it sends a to Facebook that you’ve been hacked.
That triggers your account being locked as a security measure.
Then when your defence is you shared your password, you’re in breach of their T&Cs.
Mistake #2: Responding to your friend’s ‘plea’ for help in Messenger/email
You know the type of message I mean:
“Can you help me please? I’ve been locked out of my account and need 3 friends to click this link to confirm it’s me. I have 2 so far”.
When you click, you give the hackers access to your account.
Before you can say, “oh gawd, why did I do thatttt?!”, they’re running amok.
You are most vulnerable to this when you’re tired and not really thinking straight.
Call me cynical but I reckon these messages are intentionally sent in the evening for this reason!
So, tell yourself you’ll leave dealing with it until the morning and when you read it again, wide awake, you’ll have your wits about you.
For the avoidance of doubt, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK in the morning either!
Mistake #3: Creating a team Facebook profile
Having more than one Facebook profile is a breach of T&Cs.
You’ll get away with it until you don’t.
And then…
I’ve seen one person have their main account shut down for this before.
I don’t know if that would definitely happen but it’s not a risk I’d want you to take if Facebook is a key business tool.
Instead, set up a Facebook page for your team and make that a group admin.
Then add your core team as admin of the page so they can all interact as the page.
Mistake #4: Not having 2-Factor Authorisation set up
2FA means if you or anyone else tries to log in from an unrecognised device or browser, you have to confirm it’s you.
Please, for the love of everything yellow, if you do not have 2FA set up already, DO IT NOW!
Go to “Settings and Privacy” > “Privacy” > “Account Settings”.
And again, when you receive the “someone is trying to log into your account” notification, only say, ‘yes it’s me’, if you are 100% sure it is you.
I know that seems obvious, but I refer you back to my point #2 above, re the dangers of tiredness and doing stuff on autopilot.
Mistake #5: Having only one admin for your page or group
This isn’t a hacking or shut down risk but it’s about the consequence of either of those two things happening.
If your personal Facebook account is the only person who has full admin rights to your page or group (not just editors or moderators) and your account is:
– shut down – you are not getting your admin access back.
– or hacked – you will have zero chance of being able to remove the hackers before they remove you.
My advice is to have 3+ full admin, at least one of which is in the same location as you – ideally the same home.
Then if anything does happen, you can use their device to get in and run your communities.
