A couple of weeks back, I added a new ‘position’ to my Linkedin profile.

The updating of my profile sent a notification to all my connections, notifying them of my ‘new job’.

You may have received this notification too.

Underneath the notification, you’re offered the opportunity to “say congrats”, and if you choose to congratulate the person on their new job, the message is pre-populated for you.

Urgh!

Pre-populated blanket messages are the epitome of how not to build relationships!

Linkedin Congrats Message

You only need to hit the send button and job done.

But, is it?

In the seven days that have passed since I updated my profile, I’ve received about 30 ‘congrats’ messages into my inbox.

Linkedin Inbox

It’s SOCIAL media!

Would you walk up to a prospective client, recruiter, or colleague offline, and say, ”

“Congratulations on your new role. Hope you’re doing well.”

… then walk off?

No.

Marketing – yourself, or your business – is ALL about building relationships!

You have to put in effort to build relationships. Sending a templated monotone message just isn’t going to cut it.

There is a LOT of noise online, and if you’re here to get noticed by your ideal clients, recruiters or peers, you’re only going to be visible when you stop creating noise and add value!

How Not to Build Relationships in LinkedinDo the OPPOSITE of what everyone else is doing!

Next time you see a notification that someone has updated their profile or is celebrating an anniversary, and you want to reach out to them and offer your congratulations… take a couple of minutes more to make that communication meaningful.

  • Have a quick skim of their profile to see what they’ve posted about recently.
  • If it’s a new position, what information have they added about their position?
  • Do you have any shared connections – people you may have had contact with recently?
  • Or, just reference something from their profile in your message!

Make your message about adding value to their day, and not about you ticking off “communicate with my Linked in connections” on your daily to-do list.

In having an account on Linkedin or any of the other social networks, you have a HUGE opportunity to build truly valuable, long-lasting relationships that can lead to all kinds of great rewards.

But there are no shortcuts to success.

You HAVE to put the work in.

You have to show up, regularly and consistently to ADD VALUE!

So please, PLEASE, don’t send anyone a message that you didn’t even write, and can’t be bothered to edit in any meaningful way – and then expect for them to care when you contact them later, wanting them to promote you, endorse you, hire you, or buy from you.

Be social. Add value. Stand out.
