It saddens me when I see truly smart people in mentoring groups who have handed over control of their choices to whoever’s program it is they have invested in.
Say for example, you invest in a 90-day program with a sales and marketing expert who promises to teach you how to sign five new premium paying clients every month, so you reliably make 20k monthly, organically.
When you get inside the program, you discover that their method to sign premium clients every month is to send 100 cold emails, book sales calls from those emails and sign new clients on the calls.
What’s your reaction?
1: “Let’s go! I’m a bit uncertain as this is new but I’m excited to try it.”
2: “Hmmm, I don’t want to send 100s of cold emails or book tens of Zoom calls but I can learn from this person, take the parts of their strategies I like and adapt or leave what I don’t.
Let’s play.”
3: “I don’t like the sound of their method at all.
I’m shuddering at the thought of sending 100s of cold emails and booking loads of sales calls every week.
I want 20k months and everyone says they know their stuff so I will just do what they say.”
Numbers 1 and 2 trust themselves to say no to what is a NO for them.
Number three has handed over the remote control for their power to their mentor.
The story will end with them feeling deflated because they didn’t get results or the results they do get will be unsustainable.
Flat-out rejecting an expert’s uncomfortable, new strategy is as disempowering as blindly doing what they say, even when it makes you want to throw up or you really hate it.
I encourage my clients to push back when something I advise them to do evokes a NO response in their body, and to be open to exploring whether it’s a limiting belief or if it’s truly not aligned.
To find out, I’ll explain the theory behind my advice and invite them to check in with themselves again.
If it is still a hard NO, it’s a no.
In that case, we adapt to achieve the outcome in a way that will not send their nervous system into a tailspin.
Remember, you know yourself better than anyone.
You hold ultimate power over your own decisions, actions and results.
Be ready to stretch your comfort zone to your edges, because that’s where the growth is.
But NEVER give any expert power over your mind.
